Coleonemas grow in the wild in the Eastern and Western Cape. These woody evergreen shrubs grow 1 to 3 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide and have many thin, lateral branches.  The aromatic and deodorizing qualities of the stems and leaves can be used to repel mosquitoes and ants.

SOIL
Well-drained, compost-enriched soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH-balance is best.  Mulch with coarse compost or bark to help protect the delicate root system.

WATERING
Coleonemas are relatively water-wise and will survive among other plants with low water requirement, but regular deep watering during the warmest part of the summer will keep them lush.  Make sure that when you first plant your Coleonema keep it watered well until established.

FERTILIZING AND PRUNING
Prune them immediately after they have finished flowering to keep them neat and to stimulate dense new growth and the formation of more flower buds.  Don't allow the seed capsules that emerge after the flowers to develop-remove them when you prune.  After pruning apply a slow-release organic fertilizer and renew the layer of mulch around the plants.

PEST AND DISEASE
Appealing to today's busy gardener, these are a highly disease resistant plant. They require very little spraying.  You might see some aphids.

PROTECTION
They cope well in very warm, dry and arid regions but in humid regions that experience intense heat and excessive summer rainfall, they can fall prey to a root disease called phytopthora which can be fatal.  They will not survive heavy frost and extremely cold winters.  It would be good to cover if the weather drops into the 30's.

Welcome to Sperbeck's Nursery

We began building our business in 1986 and opened the doors May 16th, 1987. Our mission for our business is a place where our guests and friends are welcomed and they will.....

"Be aware of the blessings of the beauty of this world, of the joy of friendships shared and of the peace found only in Him"

....through the gardens and the landscapes of which we are blessed to help create.

We enjoy helping our customers at the nursery take home the right plant or garden accessory for the place in their garden.  We delight teaching customers how to be successful with their garden projects from planting, to properly caring for them and enjoying them as they add beauty and value to their homes for years to come.  We love designing or installing landscapes, now for two generations of clients.  We appreciate maintaining our landscapes to allow them to mature into the beauty for which they were created.
